Who we are

The Estonian Environment Institute (EKKI) is an independent, non-profit research organisation based in Tartu, Estonia. Founded in 2010, we carry out applied environmental research and turn knowledge into practical support for planning, policy and decision-making.

Our purpose

We work to strengthen the way environmental considerations are understood and applied in Estonia and internationally. Our aim is to support decisions that are informed, transparent and grounded in evidence.

EKKI provides an open meeting point for researchers, practitioners, decision-makers and the wider public. By bringing different perspectives together, we contribute to more sustainable environmental governance, planning and management.

Our work is organised around four main research areas:

Alongside research, we organise seminars, courses and professional learning activities. We also support decision-makers and practitioners with advice and guidance based on current research and practical experience.

How we work

We are independent, multidisciplinary and collaborative. Our researchers come from different academic and professional backgrounds, allowing us to approach environmental questions from several perspectives.

We connect scientific knowledge with real planning and decision-making processes. This helps ensure that our research remains relevant, understandable and useful in practice.

Organisation

EKKI is governed by a Board of Directors and supported by an international Research Council. The Research Council advises the institute on research priorities and contributes international knowledge and experience.

Our team consists of researchers and experts working across environmental science, governance, planning, impact assessment and energy management.
